In-Depth Review
Adobe Firefly is Adobe's browser-based AI image app, and its Remove Background tool is free to use. Adobe moved the tool here from Adobe Express, so this is now the official home for it. Upload a product photo - JPEG, PNG or WEBP up to 40 MB - select Remove Background, and the result downloads as a transparent PNG. There is no watermark and no low-resolution cap on the download, which is the practical difference against free tiers that hand back a preview-quality file and charge for the real one. For sellers on Shopify, Amazon or Etsy who need a clean cutout ready to drop onto a white marketplace background, that matters from the first image.
Removal is fully automatic. Adobe's edge detection handles the cases that usually force manual masking - hair and fur, soft fabric edges, and semi-transparent objects - without asking you to select or refine anything. It works the same way across people, pets, products, illustrations and complex graphics, so a catalogue that mixes flat-lay apparel with worn shots and packaging does not need a different approach per image type. The whole flow is four steps: open Firefly, upload, select Remove Background, download.
Where Firefly extends past a single-purpose remover is what happens next. Instead of only knocking the background out, you can describe a replacement one and have it generated, remove an unwanted object or person from the frame, upscale a low-resolution supplier image, or expand a shot that was cropped too tight for a marketplace aspect ratio. Firefly Boards is useful for laying several cutouts side by side when you are deciding on a look for a range. From there you can pull the file into Photoshop for finishing, or into Adobe Express to drop it into a template with text, icons and shapes for a listing graphic or social post.
The limits are worth knowing before you commit. Background removal itself is free, but Firefly's generative features run on credits, and the no-plan free tier gives a limited number of daily generations that reset each day. Paid plans are Firefly Standard at $9.99/month for 2,000 generative credits, Pro at $19.99 for 4,000, Pro Plus at $49.99 for 10,000, and Premium at $199.99 for 50,000. The tier worth noting is Pro: it is the cheapest plan that bundles Adobe Express Premium and full Photoshop on web and mobile, so a seller who wants the cutout, the template library and a real editor is looking at $19.99, not $9.99. The browser tool also processes one image at a time, so anyone pushing hundreds of SKUs through per session should be looking at a dedicated batch or API service such as Remove.bg or Claid.ai rather than clicking through Firefly.
